Drugs For ADHD

Introduction

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a pyschological disorder caused by problematic neurodevelopment which is usually associated with abnormal, often inappropriate behavior with impulsivity as well as forgetfullness. It is seen in first in children usually between the ages 6 and 12 and it may continue into later stages of life. It hampers and disrupts life of people; children suffer from fall in academic performance while adults suffer from relationship breakdowns and job performance.

To combat this growing issue, a lot of therapy and treatment has been developed over the years, from social counselling to prescribed drugs. The drugs to treat ADHD are in form of stimulants, non stimulants and antidepressents. Many have been used extensively and have proved beneficial in many cases to combat ADHD.

Stimulants

The most common of ADHD drugs consist of stimulants; stimulants are used to calm down the patients for a minimum from 5-12 hours and are used to treat both medium to severe cases of ADHD. They significantly reduce effect of ADHD in patients, and are in three types-short-lasting, medium-lasting, and long lasting. Each have quick effects and wear off quickly, effect of a longer time period, and longest effect respectively. Some drugs include Ritalin(methylphenidate), Aderall(amphetamine) and Focalin(dexmethylphenidate). Although these have relatively calming effects they also have unpleasant side effects such as sleep disorders, stomach pains and mood swings.

Non Stimulants

Non-stimulants are also used for ADHD treatment. They are often used due to the absence of unpleasant and lesser side effects and usually have a time period of 24 hours. The most common of these include Strattera(atomoxetine), and Intuniv (guanfacine).

Antidepressants

Often, antidepressents have also been found to potentially combat cases of ADHD. Some common drugs are Tofranil (imipramine) and Wellbutrin(bupropion).

A good solution?

ADHD medications have been seen to be quite successful in reducing problems in concentration and focus and can help control emotions. However these drugs can bring in many side effects as well as many have been linked to suicidal thoughts. Thus many people may also choose to take counselling and behavorial therapy as an alternative. But the drugs on ADHD remain a dependable solution to deal with ADHD successfully.
