ADHD vs Autism

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurobehavioral disorder that occurs primarily in children causing them to be inattentive, impulsive and hyperactive. On the other hand, autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a set of syndromes that also affect children’s behavior. ASD also provokes poor growth and miscommunication.

Recent research and studies have brought to light that both of these conditions can co-exist in children- the patient might have a blend of ASD and ADHD symptoms. In addition, now it is known that many of the symptoms of these disorders are quite similar.

Similarities between Autism and ADHD

The symptoms of autism and ADHD often overlay. They have similar symptoms such as fidgety behavior, lack of focus, miscommunication and the inability to comprehend others’ feelings or sentiments. Therefore, it becomes hard to differentiate between the two conditions.

Diagnosis and Treatment

The co-occurrence of autism and ADHD poses a great risk of an ADHD misdiagnosis. It is, therefore, very important to get a proper diagnosis at the first stage. Consulting an ADHD doctor is a viable solution as they possess profound expertise in this field. As a parent, you could do some research yourself such as going through autism and ADHD books or ADHD websites.

The treatment is even quite similar for the two disorders. Therapies, diets or exercises are mostly the same for both autism and ADHD. If you are treating ADHD, it would not be surprising to find that the symptoms of autism in your child are diminishing as well.

However, a misdiagnosis can be very crucial and pathetic. The symptoms then may not lessen but instead may become more fierce and serious. Hence, ADHD diagnosis and treatment should be done carefully as it is a very delicate matter.
